There’s a nip in the air and thoughts are turning to autumn and the clocks going back. But here at the Market we’re making time; we’ve added an extra trading day to our working week – whoop!

Which means there is extra time for shopping and of course eating - and this week we can’t get enough cheese on our plates. We are eagerly awaiting the results of the British Cheese Awards and in preparation we’ll be trying our hand at some of Hayley’s dishes at this Thursday’s Demo Kitchen and also giving Ed Smith’s new recipe a whirl.

And where there’s cheese, there must be bread. We’ve been watching the Bread Ahead bakers at work in their new bakery and enjoying the loaves hitting the stall still warm from the ovens.

Also, as Scottish Food and Drink fortnight kicks off, we’ve invited chef Luke Mackay (who as he puts it, “ponces about in a kilt whenever the opportunity arises”) to contemplate the food of his forefathers. Read on, Mackay"
