The Doctor and His Mother: The Story of Two Portraits by John Constable

Wednesday 16 October - Sunday 10 May 2020
In 1829, John Constable painted a portrait of his doctor, Dr. Herbert Norman Evans, and sometime later an identical-sized portrait of Dr. Evans' mother, Deborah Mascall. Constable was living in Well Walk, opposite Burgh House, at the time.
On long-term loan to Burgh House from the Reverend Norman Evans, direct descendant of the doctor, we take a closer look at these two pictures with their incredible journey, featuring a devastating theft, a rubbish dump in Brighton, international art auctions, the black market and skilled restoration work to bring the pair back together.

Lifelines with Robert Powell

Thursday 10 October, 7:30pm
Perhaps best known for his starring role in Jesus of Nazareth, Powell has proved himself equally adept at playing heroes or villains in costume dramas, comedies, contemporary thrillers and recently even soaps. These days he is one of Britain's busiest voice-over artists, he has been heard in countless documentaries and adverts.
Join us for an evening of conversation with actor Peter Egan about his incredible career.

Star

Friday 18 October, 7:30pm
STAR A monologue by Katherine Tozer for Palimpsest starring Nick Barber (Rex Fairbrother,The Archers) as David Garrick.
Set in September 1747, as a wave of ‘Garrick Fever’ hits London for the opening of the Drury Lane Theatre under the actor’s management. With the reputation of theatre at an all-time low, Garrick sets out to make himself rich and his profession acceptable.
With a Prologue to the new season written by Samuel Johnson, Garrick promises to throw new light on elocution and action, banish rantingand bombast and to restore simplicity and humour to the British Stage. He also casts his keen eye towards dramatic special effects. But his ‘spirits are uncomposed and every circumstance about him in a perfect dilemma’; it’s three hours before curtain-up and Peg Woffington is arguing the Epilogue and he’s quarrelled with Macklin, the Season’s opener.
It’ll be alright on the night, won’t it?
