We're Reopening!

We have been a little quiet over the last couple of weeks and with good reason!
We are delighted to be opening our doors and welcoming visitors to Burgh House once again. As always, there is no charge for entry, but we have a few new measures in place to help keep staff and visitors safe.
From Wednesday 16 September we will have a free, timed entry system in place. Tickets can be booked in advance here
Visitors will be asked to wear face coverings whilst in the building and to give details for NHS Track & Trace (find out more below).
We can't wait to welcome you all back to the house, we hope to see some of you very soon!

A Nest of Gentle Artists: Randolph Schwabe and his Hampstead Contemporaries

Wednesday 16 September 2020 - Sunday 7 March 2021

This exhibition highlights Randolph Schwabe’s (1885-1948) distinguished contribution to the practice and spirit of twentieth century British art through his skill as a painter, draughtsman and illustrator as well as his career as art educator, having succeeded Henry Tonks as Professor and Principal of the Slade School of Fine Art in 1930. It draws on his richly detailed diaries which he commenced immediately prior to his Slade appointment and continued until his untimely death in post in 1948 to offer insights into the artistic and literary circles of which he was a part.

Schwabe lived at 20 Church Row, Hampstead from 1928 and his wide circle of friends included some of the most important artists and writers living and working in Hampstead at that time. While conservative rather than revolutionary in his work and ideals, Schwabe was nonetheless well respected by fellow artists and was much in demand to serve on juries and national committees where his critical advice was sought including the War Artists’ Advisory Committee during the Second World War.

Known as a scholarly artist Schwabe was a sympathetic and kindly teacher who influenced a generation of students. By bringing together for the first time a selection of important works by Schwabe, his students and his contemporaries, including Paul Nash, Daphne and George Charlton, Donald Towner, William Clause and Ethel Walker this exhibition at Burgh House aims to encourage an appreciation and understanding of his life particularly in Hampstead and the impact it had upon his work and those around him.
With special thanks to guest curator Gill Clarke, author of The Diaries of Randolph Schwabe (available from the Burgh House shop)
