Transport for London - Weekend travel information

Banner - you must wear a face covering or face a fine
Across our network we’ve put new measures in place to keep everyone safe. Find out what safety measures you can expect to see when travelling, including hand sanitiser, our enhanced cleaning regime and face covering enforcement.

You must wear a face covering over your mouth and nose for your entire journey including inside stations. Unless you are exempt, you could be refused travel or face a £200 fine which doubles with every violation up to £6,400.

Our enforcement officers continue to ensure face covering compliance across the network and to date have stopped over 91,000 people not wearing face coverings from boarding our services.

Buses and roads

We have introduced dedicated school travel only bus services across various routes during term time on weekdays from 07:30-09:30 and 14:30-16:30. These buses have clear signs to differentiate them from regular bus services and information is posted at bus stops and online

Please plan and allow more time for your journeys if you are travelling by bus during school travel times as you may have to wait longer. Please travel during quieter times where possible. Check to see if your route is affected or view a full list of bus routes affected.

Extending bus lane hours trial - From Sunday 13 September, bus lanes on most Red Routes are operating 24 hours, 7 days a week. Some parking bays are also suspended to help keep the bus lanes clear. If you drive your vehicle in a bus lane that has been converted to 24 hours, you could face a £130 fine, please check the bus lane signs on your route.

This is to support a sustainable recovery from the pandemic by helping to:

  • Make the roads safer for cyclists by providing more space
  • Keep bus journey times reliable and consistent throughout the day, making it easier for bus passengers to travel during our quiet times where possible
Blue Badge parking facilities will remain and loading bays won't initially be affected. Existing access for motorcyclists, licensed taxis and cyclists will continue. These changes are being introduced as part of a trial that will last for up to 18 months. Find out more and check which roads will be affected.

Limited Night Bus services are running and due to the following works, some buses may be diverted or stop short of their normal destination. Make sure you check before you travel.

Greenwich – Until October there will be a series of works, including lane closures and temporary signals on the A206 between Christchurch Way and Angerstein Roundabout, while we build a cycle lane. Delays are expected, if possible travel during our quiet times for a better journey.

Gallows Corner flyover - New speed and weight restrictions on A127 Gallows Corner flyover. Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes will no longer be able to use the flyover and will need to use the roundabout underneath or find alternative routes. Additionally, the speed limit on the flyover will be reduced from 30mph to 20mph. These new restrictions will help to protect the flyover and reduce the need for additional works ahead of a major maintenance programme planned for mid-2021.

Hammersmith Bridge - Emergency closure. Following expert technical advice, Hammersmith & Fulham Council has taken the decision to close the bridge to all traffic – including pedestrians and cyclists – until we can be assured it is safe. While, it’s already closed to general traffic and buses and has been for a while, it will now be closed to people walking and cycling.

Engineers are on site assessing the damage, which may have been caused by the recent extreme weather, and we continue to work with Hammersmith & Fulham and Richmond upon Thames councils on this project. Find out more.

Knightsbridge – Until early November there will be lane restrictions and temporary lights on the A4, Knightsbridge at the junctions with Sloane Street and Brompton Road. These are for essential works carried out by Cadent Gas to replace a main.

Vauxhall Bridge - Until late November 2020, Vauxhall Bridge will be closed to general traffic in both directions, this is due to safety critical repair works. Currently access will be maintained, in both directions, for people walking and cycling, and for southbound buses, coaches, and taxis. Buses and coaches northbound towards Victoria will be on diversion via Lambeth Bridge and Millbank. All other vehicles will be on diversion, and if using the signed diversion route will be exempt from the Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone charges.

Some evening full closures for all of the bridge will be required. If your journey is through the area but not stopping locally, please consider re-routing. Chelsea Bridge, Lambeth Bridge and surrounding roads are also expected to be very busy. Find out more.

Shoreditch - Until 30 September 2020, Shoreditch High Street will have a contra-flow reducing the width of the carriageway in both directions between Holywell Lane and New Yards Inn. This is due to Shoreditch Village development works.

London Bridge - On Wednesday 16 September, London Bridge reopened to general traffic, however the times you will be able to use the bridge will be restricted.

  • Monday to Friday, between 07:00 - 19:00, only buses, licensed taxis, motorcyclists and people walking and cycling will be able to use the bridge
  • Monday to Friday, after 19:00 - 07:00 and anytime on weekends, all traffic will be able to use the bridge
  • Licensed taxis will be permitted to use the bridge at all times

Between 07:00 and 19:00 vehicles restricted from using London Bridge will need to use a different river crossing. Please be aware that many of our bridges and tunnels have height, weight or width restrictions. Please plan ahead and check before you travel, for the latest information please visit status updates.

Delays are expected, please plan ahead and check before you travel, for the latest information please visit status updates.
