As the Easter holidays approach, we had a look through our egg-cellent collections for Easter stories from the First and Second World Wars.

This hand-carved wooden egg was given by a Russian POW as a gift to Private H H Gurdin of the 7th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, who was wounded in March 1918 and also captured by the Germans.

Two photographs in our collection highlight the importance of Easter to Polish soldiers during the Second World War.

On Easter Sunday, 25 April 1943, Captain Władysław Smrokowski celebrates the Polish custom of sharing eggs at Easter.
