La Haine (1995) led to a special French Cabinet meeting being called. Was this a film that reflected French social disorder, predicted it or caused it? Mathieu Kassovitz brought together three young talents, Vincent Cassel, Hubert KoundΓ© and Said Taghmaoui in a stunning tour de cinema. Each film is accompanied by an introductory illustrated talk by Jon Davies, Tutor in French Cinema at Morley College.

Kennington Talkies presents Calamity Jane (1953),
Thursday June 27th @ 7:30pm
Kennington Talkies continues the season of Doris Day films with Calamity Jane (1953), a musical directed by David Butler, and co-starring Howard Keel.
Calamity Jane is the shotgun rider on the Deadwood stagecoach. When the patrons of the town’s saloon complain that they do not have a top class female entertainer, Jane rashly promises to get a star attraction from Chicago to sing at the saloon, much to the amusement of Wild Bill Hickok.

Pride Event – We’re on the Telly! Television’s role in liberating LGBT lives, Friday June 28th @ 7:00pm
Terry Sanderson will explore the early programming that got us to the point we are at now, where LGBT lives on telly are no longer a novelty but are woven intrinsically into drama, soaps and reality TV. The evening will include a full showing of a BBC TV play from 1984, More Lives Than One, which bravely tackled the then common practice of police entrapment of cottagers. Part of the 2019 Pride Festival.

What is Democracy? (2018),
Sunday June 30th @ 6:30pm
Wonder Reels present a special screening of a documentary coming at a moment of profound political and social crisis. What Is Democracy?(2018) reflects on “democracy” – a word we too often take for granted. Plus live music from leftist icon Laetitia Sadier.
