Buses and roads

Bus and road users may be affected by the following changes this weekend. We expect to run a good service, but buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

Car Free Day - World Car Free Day takes place on Sunday 22 September with more than 20km of roads closed in and around the City of London, Southwark and Tower Hamlets. Additionally, London Bridge and Tower Bridge will be closed to general traffic and delays are expected.

For journeys across London, avoid central London where possible and use alternative routes such as the A406 or the A205. To get around central London or reach the event, customers should walk, cycle or use public transport as these are likely to be the quickest and easiest ways to travel. Buses will be running across London Bridge to help people reach the event and there are nine Tube stations nearby. Visit our travel advice page for more information.

Westminster Bridge - Until 05:00 on Saturday 9 November, Westminster Bridge will be closed to westbound traffic and Bridge Street will be closed in both directions. During these works, licensed taxis, buses and cyclists will continue to have access to the bridge westbound. Delays are expected on the approaches to Westminster Bridge, Parliament Square and the surrounding area.

Using Vauxhall Bridge and the Inner Ring Road south of the river may mean a quicker journey for trips across London. Disruption in and around Parliament Square can be a regular occurrence due to planned works, events or protests. Please consider alternatives to driving for local journeys if possible. Please visit our travel advice page for more information.

Gallows Corner - Until tomorrow, Friday 23, and then from Bank Holiday Monday 26 until Friday 30 August, Gallows Corner Flyover will be closed between 09:30 and 20:00 each day for essential restructuring and maintenance works. Signed diversions will be in place.

London Bridge - From Friday 23 until Bank Holiday Monday 26 August, Tooley Street will be closed westbound between Tower Bridge Road and Tanner Street. Buses and taxis will be on diversion. General traffic is unable to use Tooley Street westbound at this location. Additionally, Tower Bridge will be reduced to one lane southbound for all traffic outside the bridge.

Diversion routes and the surrounding area will be extremely busy and delays are expected, so please allow more time for your journey or consider using alternative transport, such as Tube or Rail. This is while we carry out work to construct a segregated cycleway along Tooley Street and Jamaica Road. Please see our Cycleway 4 page for more information.

City of London - From 20:00 on Friday 23 August until Sunday 1 September, the A10 Northern Folgate / Bishopsgate will be closed southbound between Commercial Street and Camomile Street, and northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane. Provision for cyclists will be maintained in both directions. The official diversion route will be signed along Commercial Street and Leman Street. Delays are expected, so plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. Use alternative routes if necessary. This is due to essential UKPN works, with various other works taking place at the same time.

Notting Hill - Over the bank holiday weekend, restrictions and road closures will be in place for Notting Hill Carnival. From tomorrow, Friday 23 until Wednesday 28 August, there will be various restrictions every night from 21:00 until 02:30 to build and remove barriers.

From 12:00 until 23:59 on Saturday 24 August, there will be various road closures in the Notting Hill area, including Kensal Road between Ladbroke Grove and Golborne Road, and on Southern Row between Ladbroke Grove and Golborne Road. Please use alternative routes.

From 06:00 until 23:59 on Sunday 25, and from 06:00 on Bank Holiday Monday 26 until 06:00 on Tuesday 27 August, there will be extensive road closures in the Notting Hill area, from Harrow Road in the north, Notting Hill Gate in the south, North Pole Road in the west and Queensway in the east. Increased traffic levels and delays are expected in the area, including A5 Edgware Road, Harrow Road, Holland Park Avenue, Notting Hill Gate and Bayswater Road. Traffic is likely to be slow moving, so use alternative routes where possible.

Croydon - From tomorrow, Friday 23 August, until Sunday 1 September, there will be some temporary changes to buses while we upgrade tracks, roads and bridges in the Croydon area. Local buses will be on diversion due to road closures:
  • Routes 119, 194 and 198 will not serve Addiscombe Road in either direction. Instead, they will divert via Shirley Road, Lower Addiscombe Road and Cherry Orchard Road
  • Route 466 will not serve Shirley Hills Road, Upper Shirley Road or Addiscombe Road. Instead it will divert via Coombe Lane, Coombe Road and Park Hill Road
We will increase the number of buses on busy routes.

Burdett Road - From 08:00 on Saturday 24 August until 17:00 on Sunday 8 September, Burdett Road will have a four-way temporary traffic signal system in use. There will be no right-turn into St Paul's Way, but there will be a signed diversion. This is due to cabling works. These works will also take place the following weekend.

Clapham Common - On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August, a music festival will take place on Clapham Common, from 11:00 until 23:00 each day. Nightingale Lane will be closed during the festival. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on Rookery Road between Clapham Common South Side and Long Road, and also on The Avenue near Nightingale Walk to help with crowd control. Large crowds are expected in the area, including Clapham Common South station and the A205.

Twickenham Stadium - From 14:00 until 17:30, Twickenham Rugby Stadium will be hosting the Quilter International rugby match between England and Ireland, with kick off at 15:00. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected in the Twickenham area before and after the game. Roads likely to be affected include the A316 Chertsey Road, and all roads leading to Twickenham Stadium and around the stadium. London Road, Whitton Road and Rugby Road will be closed before and after the game to help with crowd control.

Wembley Stadium - From 15:00 until 17:00 on Saturday 24 August, Wembley Stadium will be hosting the Coral Challenge Cup Final rugby match between St Helens and Warrington Wolves, with kick off at 15:00. Large crowds and increased traffic levels are expected before and after the game. Roads likely to be affected include the A406, A1, A40, Harrow Road, Wembley High Road and roads around the stadium.

Strand - From 21:00 on Wednesday 28 August until 05:00 the following morning, Strand will be closed eastbound between Bedford Street and Aldwych. This is due to Morrison utility works.

A40 at Acton - Between 22:00 and 05:00 on Wednesday 28, Thursday 29 and Friday 30 August, as well as from Monday 2 until Thursday 5 September, the A40 will be reduced to one lane westbound near Savoy Circus. This is to prepare for the next stage of works to build walking and cycling improvements between Acton and Wood Lane.

From 06:00 on Monday 2 until 23:59 on Sunday 22 September, Bloemfontein Road will be closed at the junction of the A40 and bus route 283 to Hammersmith will be on diversion. Drivers should expect delays while travelling westbound during afternoon peak periods (weekdays 14:00 to 18:00). One of the best ways to make journeys to and from the area will be by Tube.
