Weekend travel information

If you are out and about this weekend, please note that there are planned works taking place on certain parts of the network.

Plan ahead and check before you travel. Our TfL Go app can help you plan your journey and show you the  quieter times . It provides live information on how busy Tube stations are during the day as well as providing details of Covid-19 vaccination centres.

The quieter times currently are:

  • Between 08:15 and 16:00 and after 17:30 on weekdays
  • Before noon and after 18:00 on weekends

Customers must wear a face covering on our services and in stations for the duration of their journey unless they are exempt, and may be refused entry or asked to leave for not doing so. This includes the Tube, bus, tram, DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail networks, Dial a Ride services, the Emirates Air Line and the Woolwich ferry.

TfL also expects and recommends the continued use of face coverings in taxis and private hire vehicles by both drivers and passengers unless they are exempt.

We are very grateful to the overwhelming majority of customers who have been complying with this requirement.

Please keep washing or sanitising your hands to help everyone stay safe. You can find out more about what we are doing to keep our services clean.

Buses and roads

Bus and road users may be affected by the following changes this weekend. We expect to run a good service, but buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

Thursday 19 until Sunday 22 August

Aldwych and the Strand two-way traffic switch

From 19:00 on Thursday 19 until early afternoon on Sunday 22 August, Aldwych and the Strand will be closed to all traffic while Westminster City Council carries out works to permanently change the road layout.

While this work takes place, roads in the surrounding area are expected to be busy and delays are expected. Use alternative routes and leave more time for your journey.

From Thursday 19 August, several bus routes will be changed due to the new road layout. Some buses will need to take a slightly different route and bus stops will be relocated. Information will be in place at all stops and ambassadors will be on hand to help you find your way.

More details about the scheme can be found by visiting Westminster City Council's website.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August

ELROW music festival

The ELROW music festival will be taking place in Trent Park, Enfield. Road closures will be in place on Cockfosters Road from 19:00 each evening to help with crowd management. Large crowds and traffic congestion are expected.

Sunday 22 August

Vitality Big Half marathon

The Vitality Big Half marathon will take place on Sunday 22 August. There will be plenty of road closures throughout Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich, from as early as 06:00 to as late as 16:00 in some areas. Plan ahead and use alternative routes as delays are expected.

Friday 27 until Tuesday 31 August

Old Street west and City Road south will be closed

From 21:00 on Friday 27 until 05:00 on Tuesday 31 August, Old Street west and City Road south will be closed at the junction while we adjust the road layout. The Inner Ring Road will remain open through Old Street with lane closures. Some local buses will be delayed, diverted or stop short of their destinations.
