Burgh House & Hampstead Museum - Chinese New Year at Burgh House

Chinese Lunar New Year comes to Hampstead!

We love Chinese New Year!

What a fabulous opportunity to forget the broken resolutions made on the 1st January and to start again on Monday 8 February, the day of the Chinese New Year. A first for Hampstead, Burgh House brings you the Year of the Monkey, the most adventurous and smartest of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. We will celebrate it with a whole series of wonderful events, starting off with the mischievous and awe-inspiring Dance of Chinese Lions on New Year's Eve, Sunday 7 February.

Dance of Chinese Lions

Sun 7 Feb, 2pm

Meet outside Barclays Bank on Hampstead High street for a traditional lion dance to bring good luck and fortune. Performed by the Imperial College Lion Dance Team.

Visual Firecrackers: Paintings and Sculptures

Wed-Fri & Sun 12pm-5pm
From 10 to 21 Feb

An exhibition curated by Jose Sureda-Herrero
In bringing together the work of Chinese artists Baoyin Du, Haiyang Lou, Mao Zongzhong, Shoufan Piao and Huang He with London based artists Xiaolan Gu, Malcolm Willett, Derek Ogbourne and Isabel H Langtry, we celebrate the Chinese New Year with visual firecrackers that explode in your imagination.
The cymbals and gongs in this exhibition are brought together by curator Jose Sureda-Herrero, the artworks like dragons parading through the street, pieces of time all in a row.

A Musical Duo to Greet The Year of the Monkey

Thur 11 Feb, 7pm

Julia Liang (violin) and Alexander Kirk (piano) are graduates of the Royal College of Music. They have appeared in major venues throughout the UK and have performed in international festivals across Europe.
The vibrant young duo will present a classical concert of exciting works by Mozart and Stravinsky.
The audience will be taken on a journey from the private salons of 18th-century Vienna in Mozart’s ‘Sonata in B Flat Major K454’, to the Paris Opera House in the ‘Divertimento’ by Stravinsky, based on the ballet The Fairy’s Kiss, which was inspired by The Ice-Maiden by Hans Christian Anderson. There will also be a few surprises along the way, with visits to Italy and China to bring in the New Year
