George Charlton:

Formative Figures
Exhibition
Until Sun 8 May

This exhibition brings together a collection of George Charlton’s Slade School nude studies, painted works and personal letters to tell the story of his professional and personal life in Hampstead in the 1930s. George and Daphne Charlton purchased 40 New End Square in 1932 and it quickly became a hub of artistic activity. Featuring recently acquired personal correspondence illustrating important milestones in his artistic life, this exhibition aims to give a personal insight into Charlton’s artistic development, as well as a glimpse into his at times controversial personal life. Ian Kellam, in his catalogue for a retrospective of both the Charltons’ work, remarked that George was a “quiet and gentle romantic, so moved by feminine beauty.” The works on display from the Burgh House collection serve to illustrate this side to George Charlton’s character, while charting his progression from student to professional artist.
