Flying ant day: Capital deluged by annual swarm of winged insects

A deluge of flying ants has swamped the capital - sparking the ire of thousands on social media.
Horrified Londoners took to Twitter to bemoan the annual "flying ant day", posting hysterical messages like "flying ants attacking my ears and eyes outside Brixton tube. Is this the end?"
Others, pausing to shake the ant carcasses out of their hair, jokingly suggested the insect swarm was an ingenious promotional stunt for Ant Man.
"Flying ant day" - which, despite the colloquial name, can actually last a couple of weeks across different regions - is the time when ants leave their colonies to mate.
