Burgh House Celebrates the Chinese New Year

Join Burgh House in celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rooster. Following the success of last year’s celebrations, we bring you a great day of festivities. At 12 noon on Flask Walk (100 yds below Hampstead Underground Station) a Magnificent Lion Dance to welcome the Lunar Chinese New Year of the Rooster 2017 Spring Festival will take place. The Burgh House Buttery Cafe is open from 9:30am for brunch, lunch and teas with a special Chinese-themed menu for the day as well. Burgh House and Hampstead Museum is open from 12 noon with Chinese tea-tasting, traditional Chinese costumes to dress up in and have your photo taken, a giant rooster to decorate, a silk scarf stall and Chinese music. Plus between 1pm and 4pm family workshops on Chinese Caligraphy, brush painting and a chance for kids to model clay and also make their own Chinese fans, lanterns and Rooster head-dresses. On display will be two very special original works donated to Burgh House by artist Xiaolan Gu, MA Fine Art, and cartoonist Ken Pyne, that you will be able to put a sealed bid on and have the chance to have them as your very own! |

London Natural History Society Bird Talk

Martyn Kenefick talks about one of the Caribbean's first conservation centres. The Asa Wright Nature Centre offers visitors a gateway to Trinidad & Tobago’s 482 species of bird, 68 different bats, 45 snakes, 765 butterflies and 3,500 moth species, representing a true introduction to the natural history of South America. Retracing Ribeiro

The Hampstead painter Lancelot Ribeiro was one of the most original of the Indian artists who settled in Britain in the post-war period. A new temporary exhibition of his works at Burgh House will launch a year-long Retracing Ribeiro programme of events, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and being celebrated as part of the 2017 UK-India Year of Culture, in partnership with The British Museum, V&A, Central Saint Martins and Camden Archives.

Ishbel McWhirter: Scrutiny and Revelation A 90th Birthday Restrospective

Ishbel McWhirter was born in 1927 and lives and works in Hampstead, London and Anglesey, North Wales. Showcasing works spanning from the 1940s to the present, this exhibition will be the first comprehensive survey of her work across seven decades. Coinciding with McWhirter’s 90thbirthday, it will celebrate her achievements as an artist. Charting her stylistic developments, personal relationships and singular sensitivities, it aims to communicate what makes McWhirter so distinctive and unique as a 20th century artist.

Author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Deborah Moggach chats with award-winning author, journalist and agony aunt Virginia Ironside, whose journalism has spanned Woman magazine, Sunday Mirror, Today, the Sunday Post, The Independent and Oldie. Alongside her journalistic career solving peoples’ problems, Virginia has been writing novels since her first book, Chelsea Bird, was published at the age of nineteen. Most recently, No, Thanks! I’m Quite Happy Standing! Was described by Wendy Holden as “funny” and “brave”, describing her humour as “reminiscent of the great Sue Townsend’s (and I can pay no greater compliment) — a combination of unpretentiousness, generosity and piercing insight” .
