The Courtauld Gallery cares for an important collection of early twentieth century Bloomsbury Group works, including paintings, collages, drawings, watercolours, and designs and decorative arts from the Omega Workshops. Most of the collection was bequeathed by Roger Fry to the newly formed Courtauld Institute of Art in 1935; Fry was the central figure of the group, which included artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. This special display brings together a wide-ranging selection of work by this remarkable group.

Drawings Room display

This display examines the intriguing variety of inscriptions that can be found on  drawings, from artists’ signatures to casual notes and records of ownership. Featuring works by Canaletto, Corot, Signac and others, this selection reveals how such annotations can shed light on the purpose, history and use of drawings.

This Study Morning focuses on a number of examples from our extensive collection of master drawings.  Our speakers will explore the diverse functions and uses of drawings in artists’ workshops, studios and art academies, while also considering the more ideal value given to drawings from Giorgio Vasari onwards.

The Courtauld Gallery is delighted to announce a significant addition to its modern collection displays: British artist Bridget Riley’s Kiss, on loan from a private collection and on display until mid-June 2017.

Kiss is a pivotal work in Riley’s career, the earliest of her pioneering black and white paintings from the 1960s. This loan follows The Courtauld Gallery’s critically acclaimed Bridget Riley: Learning from Seurat exhibition in 2015.

Bloomsbury Needlepoint
The Courtauld launches a new two-year MA in Buddhist Art: History and Conservation for 2017/18 in collaboration with SOAS.
    
This MA provides a comprehensive grounding in the history of Buddhism and Buddhist art and its conservation for those intending to pursue further specialist conservation education, and for those who wish to proceed into related fields such as art-historical research, curating and site-management.
    
Dr Giovanni Verri, Lecturer in Buddhist Art and its Conservation, said “This collaboration between The Courtauld and SOAS will make a step change in the conservation of Buddhist Art”.
