Buses and roads

To help improve air quality, an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is now in operation in central London, replacing the T-charge. Most vehicles will need to meet new, tighter exhaust emission standards (ULEZ standards) or pay a daily charge to travel within the area of the ULEZ.

The daily charge runs from midnight to midnight, seven days a week, every day of the year, within the same area as the current Congestion Charging Zone. Your vehicle may not meet the ULEZ standards even if it meets the current Low Emission Zone standards. The ULEZ charge will be in addition to the weekday Congestion Charge and the London-wide LEZ charge.

Check if your vehicle is compliant.

For more information, visit our ULEZ web page.

Bus and road users may be affected by the following changes this weekend. We expect to run a good service, though buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

A306 Hammersmith Bridge - Hammersmith Bridge is closed to all motorised traffic following safety inspections by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Diversions are in place. Bus routes 33, 72, 209, 419, 485 and 609 are on diversion or stopping short of their destination. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the bridge as normal. Delays in the area and on diversion routes are expected and alternative river crossings such as Putney and Chiswick bridges will be busy. Check before you travel and replan your journey. You can get live travel updates from @TfLTrafficNews.

Beckenham - Until 17:00 on Friday 12 April, there will be various restrictions on Bromley Road at the junction of High Street Beckenham. During the works High Street Beckenham will be closed between Rectory Road and Bromley Road towards Beckenham Town Centre only. Buses will be diverted. Until 18:00 on Friday 12 April 2019, there will be four-way temporary traffic lights at Rectory Road / Southend Road, with a nearside lane closure on the Rail Bridge. Traffic turning right into Rectory Road will need to use the opposite side of the carriageway. This is due to Thames Water works.

Parliament Square - On Friday 12 April, Parliament Square will be closed in all directions. This is due to a demonstration. From 07:00 until 23:59 on Monday 15 April, a group will form up at this location for a demonstration. Expect delays in the area.

Richmond Park Area - From 07:00 until 23:59 on Friday 12 April, a gathering is expected to take place within the park. Local disruption may be likely. From 07:00 until 23:59 on Sunday 14 April, there will be another demonstration. A group will form up within the park and march to central London. Expect delays in the area.

Clapham Common - From 07:00 on Monday 15 April until 19:00 on Saturday 4 May there will be a temporary traffic signal control in all directions at the junction of Cedars Road. During this time single alternate lanes will work under temporary traffic signal control with the carriageway reduced to a single lane on approaches. This is due to SGN gas works.

Hyde Park Corner - From 07:00 until 23:59 on Monday 15 April, a group will form up at this location for a demonstration. Expect delays in the area.

Tower Bridge - Every night between 22:00 and 05:00 from Tuesday 16 until Monday 22 April, there will be a full closure on Tower Bridge. This is due to maintenance works.

Highbury Corner – From Friday 19 until Monday 22 April, there is an expected switch to two-way traffic at Highbury Corner. For more information visit our Highbury Corner travel advice page.

Highbury Corner – From 00:01 to 07:00 on Monday 22 April (Easter weekend), St Paul’s Road and Canonbury Road will be temporarily closed to all traffic while we change Highbury Corner to two-way traffic. Buses will be on diversion or curtailed during these works. Following the change, please drive carefully while pedestrians, cyclists and other traffic gets used to the new two-way system. If you would normally use the A1 to travel into / out of central London, using the A5, A10, or A41 could mean a quicker journey during these works. For more information, visit our travel advice page .

West End – Until Wednesday 17 April 2019, Tottenham Court Road has been reduced to one lane and carriageway resurfacing works are being completed. These works are to prepare for the switch to two-way traffic on Tottenham Court Road on 20 April 2019. The new southbound lane on Tottenham Court Road will initially be for buses and cyclists only, until the permanent access restrictions are introduced in spring 2020. The change on 20 April will permanently move bus routes from Gower Street / Bloomsbury Street to Tottenham Court Road. For more information visit our travel advice page .

A40 at Acton – Until late 2019, the A40 has been reduced from three to two lanes for westbound traffic, 24 hours a day, and the speed limit near works has been reduced from 40mph to 30mph for safety reasons. This is for works to construct walking and cycling improvements between Acton and Wood Lane. Drivers should expect delays while travelling westbound, especially during PM peak periods (weekdays 14:00 to 18:00). One of the best ways of making journeys to and from the area during these works will be via Tube. For more information, visit our travel advice page.

Marylebone – Baker Street will be closed between Dorset Street and Blandford Street until 17:00 on Friday 12 April 2019. Baker Street will then be closed to southbound traffic between the junction with York Street and the junction with Crawford Street / Paddington Street from 08:00 on Monday 15 April until 17:00 Thursday 18 April. Portman Street will be closed southbound between Portman Square and Granville Place until 17:00 on Friday 12 April. Portman Mews South will be closed between Granville Place and Portman Street until 17:00 on Friday 10 May 2019. Traffic, including bus and coach services, will be diverted around the closures. This is for finishing works for the Baker Street Two-way scheme.

Check whether your bus is affected.
