London Borough of Culture 2022

Lewisham is the London Borough of Culture 2022, and the Horniman is proud to be joining lots of organisations across the borough to celebrate. Look out for what we have planned throughout the year on our website, including family fun making sessions, music festivals, and participation in Lewisham-wide initiatives.

Nature + Love funding

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a £475,000 grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop our Nature + Love project.

Nature + Love will make the Horniman more inclusive and accessible, enhance the visitor experience, and open up previously under-used areas of our estate.

Horniman Micro-Forest Update

Planting has started on creating a dense and fast-growing micro-forest in the Horniman Gardens. Situated along the border with the busy South Circular (London Road), the micro-forest will create additional wildlife habitats and provide the Gardens with protection from noise and air pollution.

Buds and Bark: Identifying Winter Trees

How do you identify a tree in winter, without their leaves? It's much easier than you think. Using examples of trees on the Horniman's Nature Trail, Daniel Harwood explains how looking at buds and bark can help you learn the ID of a tree and why winter is the best time to do this.

Rutland Sea Dragon

Dr Emma Nicholls, the Horniman’s Senior Curator of Natural Sciences, was part of a specialist team of palaeontologists which last year excavated the fossilised remains of an ichthyosaur – nicknamed the 'Rutland Sea Dragon'.

The enormous fossil is thought to be the first ichthyosaur of its species found in the country, and was recently featured on BBC2’s Digging for Britain.

Butterfly House update

The Butterfly House is currently closed for important maintenance work. Once this is completed it will be a further two weeks until we have butterflies flying again. Therefore the Butterfly House will remain closed during half term. We apologise for any inconvenience.
