Royal Museums Greenwich - Save the Solebay tapestry

Save the Solebay Tapestry
The largest tapestry in our collection is in urgent need of conservation.

Commissioned by King Charles II in the 17th century, the Solebay tapestry is part of the only surviving English naval tapestry series.

The tapestry depicts the climax of the Battle of Solebay – a naval battle that occurred in May 1672. It is prized for its intricate details, from burning ships to churning waves.

Due to its age, weight and high silk content, the tapestry is incredibly weak. It is currently too fragile to go on display.

However, you can help!

We’re looking to raise £15,000 towards the tapestry’s conservation, so it can be exhibited in a major show at the Queen’s House next year. You can show your support by donating to our crowdfunding campaign, in partnership with the Art Fund, and help us Save Solebay.
