The Real Charlie Chaplin preview screening, Thursday February 17th @ 7:30pm

Longlisted for the Best Documentary at the BAFTAs, this is the definitive documentary about one of the world’s most recognisable men. From the Lambeth workhouse to Hollywood stardom – one of the greatest rags-to-riches stories ever told.

Groundbreaking, controversial, outspoken and visionary. For decades he was the most famous man in the world – but who was the real Charlie Chaplin? Drawn from a remarkable archive of newly unearthed material, The Real Charlie Chaplin will be a revealing and poignant portrait of Hollywood’s most iconic figure.

We are grateful to the distribution company, Altitude Film Distribution, for allowing us to screen the film prior to its general release as a fundraiser for the museum.

Individual tickets for each show are £8 and can either be purchased via Ticketlab or direct from the Museum by calling 020 7840 2200 during office hours..

Women & Cocaine presents; Susan Lenox (1931), Saturday February 19th @ 7:30pm

What better star to represent the month of Love than the Divine Greta Garbo!

This February join us as we immerse you in the pre code era and celebrate the Divine Garbo, a woman who’s portrayal of love and sacrifice makes every other human emotion or endeavour seem trivial.

We will be showing her rarely screened pre code classic Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise), her only film with Clark Gable. It was banned upon its release by the British censors and had to be heavily cut. Garbo plays Susan, a young girl who escapes her tyrant uncle and an arranged marriage to find a new life for herself. Instead she falls in love with a kind stranger but circumstances force her to become a woman of easy virtue.

Come join us in this beautifully historic Grade II listed venue for an introduction, then screening of the film and exclusive raffle!

“My father warned me about men & booze, but he never mentioned a word about women & cocaine” – Tallulah Bankhead.

Reserved tickets are £9.45 - click below to purchase from Eventbrite. Tickets will also be available on the door on the night. Concessions available on the door with valid ID. Phone bookings for this event cannot be made via the Cinema Museum.

Kennington Noir presents; Too Late For Tears (1949), Wednesday March 16th @ 7:30pm

Ken Noir is back, presenting Too Late For Tears (1949) directed by Byron Haskin, and starring Lizabeth Scott, Dan Duryea and Don DeFore.

One night on a lonely highway, a speeding car tosses a satchel of money meant for somebody else into Jane and Alan Palmer’s back seat. Alan wants to turn it over to the police, but Jane (Lizabeth Scott), with luxury within her reach, persuades him to hang onto it “for a while.” Soon, the Palmers are traced by one Danny Fuller (Dan Duryea), a cheap hood who claims the money is his. To hang onto the loot, Jane will need all the qualities of an ultimate femme fatale…and does she ever have them!

The racy script of Too Late For Tears was revised several times before the Production Code Administration passed it as fit to be filmed. Then, Joan Crawford was interested in playing Jane Palmer, but wanted too much money, so the part went to sultry-voiced Lizabeth Scott who turned in one of her best performances. A quintessential noir was the result. Don’t miss Ken’s film for March! Original poster tagline: “She Got What She Wanted… With Lies… With Kisses… With Murder!”

Advance tickets are £8 - click below to purchase from Ticketlab, or call 020 7840 2200 to purchase direct from the Museum during office hours.
