Transport for London - Weekend travel advice

Weekend travel information

If you are out and about this weekend, please note that there are planned closures taking place on certain parts of the network.

We are reminding customers that face coverings remain a requirement on all of our services.

You must wear a face covering when using any TfL service or station, unless you are exempt. Those who do not comply could be prevented from entering the network or asked to leave TfL services.

Like many businesses around the country, we are experiencing the effects of the pandemic with a number of staff ill due to covid or self isolating. While we continue to do all we can to keep operating a normal service, we advise everyone to check our website and the TfL Go app before they travel, as services may be affected at short notice by staff absences.

Customers using Victoria or Central line services on Friday and Saturday nights between 19:00 and 06:00 the following morning are advised to check before they travel. Customers can use the TfL Go app to check when the next services will be.

Buses and roads

Bus journeys will be affected by the following changes this weekend. We expect to run a good service, but buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

Saturday 5 February

Waitangi Day

Up to 8,000 New Zealand nationals will have their annual celebrations and carry out the 'Haka' in Broad Sanctuary on Saturday 5 February at 16:00. Broad Sanctuary will be closed from 15:30 until 17:00.

Changes to the Highway code

The Department for Transport have changed the Highway code to make it safer for people walking, cycling and horse-riding. This includes giving pedestrians priority when waiting to cross, giving cyclists priority at junctions and giving additional space when passing cyclists and horse-riders. The Highway Code has changed. Check the changes, let’s keep each other safe.

Until Saturday 5 February

Until Saturday 5 February, there will be a series of overnight directional closures of the A2 between Dartford Heath, junction with the M25 and Blackwall, junction with the A207 while we carry out essential maintenance. Work will take place between 22:00 and 05:00, Mondays to Fridays only, and will not affect access to the Blackwall Tunnel. You are advised to leave more time for your journey and follow the signed diversions. For the latest information on how roads are operating in your area,  check before you travel.

Until Friday 11 February

Until Friday 11 February, there will be a series of lane closures and temporary lights on the A5 Kilburn High Road at the junction with Oxford Road and Greville Road, while the London Borough of Camden carry out improvements for cyclists. Two-way traffic will be maintained with the lights allowing one direction to move at a time. There will also be no access into Oxford Road or Greville Road from the A5. Local diversions will be in place.

During the works significant delays to your journey are expected, especially at peak times. Please check before you travel, leave more time for your journey and use alternative routes.

Until late April 2022

There will be lane closures on both approaches to Rotherhithe Tunnel while we install overheight barriers to enforce the existing height restriction. The barrier will be operational on the north side by late March, and by late April on the south side.

While the works take place, delays to enter the tunnel, especially at peak times, are possible. You are advised to plan ahead and use alternative river crossings wherever possible. Access through the tunnel for those walking will not be affected.

If your vehicle is more than 2 metres (6'6") high, 2 metres (6'6") wide or is a goods vehicle weighing more than 2 tonnes (gross vehicle weight) then it is not safe for you to travel through the Rotherhithe Tunnel and you could be fined up to £160 each way.

For the latest information on how roads are operating in your area, check before you travel.

Until summer 2022

Until summer 2022, there will be a series of overnight lane closures and weekend directional closures on the A40 Westway while we carry out essential maintenance work. Plan ahead and check before you travel. For more details, visit our A40 Westway travel advice page
