Weekend travel information

If you are out and about this weekend, please note that there are planned closures taking place on certain parts of the network.

We strongly encourage customers to wear face coverings on our services and stations, unless exempt, even though it is no longer a requirement to do so.

This follows the Government's decision to lift coronavirus restrictions and the decreasing infection rates in London. Wearing a face covering will help to drive down transmission of coronavirus and to keep each other as safe as possible.

The information in this email could possibly change, so please check before you travel or use the TfL Go app to plan your journey.

London Underground

Until Sunday 19 June

Customers using Victoria or Central line services on Friday and Saturday nights between 19:00 and 06:00 the following morning are advised to check before they travel. Customers can use the TfL Go app to check when the next services will be.

For full information on these strikes, please visit our website.

Buses and roads

Bus journeys will be affected by the following changes this weekend. We expect to run a good service, but buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.

Friday 18 until Monday 21 March

A316 closure

From 22:00 on Friday 18 until 05:00 on Monday 21 March, the A316 will be closed to eastbound traffic between the Bear Road exit-slip and Apex Corner roundabout. A signed diversion will be in place and buses will be on diversion. Visit the website for more information.

Saturday 19 March

Trafalgar Square area

The London Walk will be taking place from 21:30 on Saturday night to 06:00 on Sunday morning. Participants will start the walk in Trafalgar Square. Increased traffic and large crowds are expected in the area.

Sunday 20 March

Moorfields Eye Hospital to Southbank

Eye to Eye 2022 walk will be taking place from 09:00 until 14:00 this Sunday. The walk will begin at Moorfields Eye Hospital near Old Street and will end at London Southbank. Increased traffic and large crowds are expected in the area.

Monday 21, Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 March

Bus strikes

A number of Arriva bus drivers will potentially strike on Monday 21, Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 March at the following times:

  • From 03:00 on Monday 21 until 02:59 on Tuesday 22 March
  • From 03:00 on Monday 28 until 02:59 on Wednesday 30 March

If this strike action goes ahead, up to 36 services will be disrupted in south London, particularly in Croydon, Thornton Heath, Streatham, Brixton and small parts of Surrey. It is possible that affected bus routes will have no service during these strikes and other local buses will be busier than normal, as customers seek alternative routes. Affected night buses will run as normal on Sunday 20 and Sunday 27 March, but are unlikely to run on the evenings of the strike dates. For more information on the affected bus routes, visit our website.

Until late April 2022

The overheight barrier on the northside approach to Rotherhithe Tunnel will be operational from 05:00 on Tuesday 22 March. Once the barrier is in place, when driving through, if the warning bells on the barrier indicate your vehicle is too high, there is an escape lane in place which will allow you to reroute.

Work is continuing to install the barrier on the south side of the tunnel and we expect both barriers to be in operation by the end of April 2022.

If your vehicle is more than 2 metres (6'6") high, 2 metres (6'6") wide or is a goods vehicle weighing more than 2 tonnes (gross vehicle weight) then it is not safe for you to travel through the Rotherhithe Tunnel and you could be fined up to £160 each way.

For the latest information on how roads are operating in your area, check before you travel.

Until June 2022

Until June 2022, weekend closures of the A40 Westway will change to affect westbound traffic while we carry out essential maintenance work. Plan ahead and check before you travel. For more details, visit our A40 Westway travel advice page
