Our new exhibition Japan: Courts and Culture opens next week at The Queen’s Gallery, London. For the first time, more than 150 works have been brought together to tell the story of 350 years of diplomatic, artistic and cultural exchange between Britain and Japan. Highlights include the first samurai armour ever seen in Britain; the Coronation gift sent to Her Majesty The Queen in 1953 and recently rediscovered folding screen paintings sent to Queen Victoria. Seeing the Samurai This impressive samurai armour was sent to James I in 1613 and was the first diplomatic gift from Japan to Britain. Delicate embroidery This richly embroidered folding screen was a Coronation gift for King Edward VII from the Japanese emperor in 1902.
