HMS Belfast in the Arctic Convoys
In February 1943, HMS Belfast began work as an escort ship for the Arctic Convoys transporting supplies to Russia in the hopes of helping the fight against Hitler on Germany's eastern front.

In her first round trip to Russia, HMS Belfast saw three merchant ships sunk by U-boats and the entire convoy attacked from the air by fighter planes. But these were not the only dangers. It was so cold, metal and skin would freeze together instantly; dawn and dusk were only hours apart, leaving the men in almost constant darkness; and the seas got so rough, the force of a single wave could rip off a whole gun turret roof.

Learn about the ship's role in the Arctic Convoys in the War and Peace exhibition on board HMS Belfast.
