BBC Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night celebrates the music of Cy Coleman at London'sHackney Empire theatre on Wednesday 6 July at 7.30pm.
Anneka Rice presents Friday Night Is Music Night's celebration of the life and work of the great composer, songwriter and jazz pianist Cy Coleman. Coleman is best known for the classic musicalSweet Charity which starred Shirley MacLaine. He also wrote the musicals Wildcat starring Lucille Ball, and Barnum, which starred Jim Dale and Glenn Close on Broadway and Michael Crawford in London.
His many songs include Witchcraft for Frank Sinatra and The Best Is Yet To Come for Tony Bennett. He was the six year old child prodigy who gave piano recitals at Carnegie Hall and he grew up to be one of the most successful songwriters and composers in musical theatre, winning five Tony Awards, two Grammys and three Emmys.
Tonight's concert stars Michael Xavier, Siobhan Dillon and Ria Jones, all from the recent smash hit revival of Sunset Boulevard and Tam Mutu who has starred in The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables.
With the sixty piece BBC Concert Orchestra, the Capital Voices and conductor Mike Reed. Music includes: The Rhythm of Life, If They Could See Me Now, Big Spender, Witchcraft, The Best Is Yet to Come, Come Follow The Band, Join the Circus, Hey Look Me Over and many, many more including the first full orchestral playing of the Barnum on ice music used by Torvill and Dean!
