Transport for London - Important travel information for the festive period

Here is our advice for getting around London during the festive period. This email is slightly longer than usual as it provides information through to early January. We also cover National Rail service changes, including those affecting airports.



Festive services

The main changes to our services on the key days are outlined below. For a one page visual summary of the services running each day, please click here 

Christmas Eve, Saturday 24 December - Last trains on Tube and rail services will be earlier than usual. Night Tube will not run, and buses will run until about midnight. 

Christmas Day, Sunday 25 December - No service on the entire TfL network. Santander Cycles will be available as normal. 

Boxing Day, Monday 26 December - Tube services will start later than usual. There will be no London Overground or TfL Rail service. Buses will run a Sunday service. Santander Cycles will be available as normal. 

Tuesday 27 - Friday 30 December - Saturday or Sunday services will run on most of the network. Night Tube will run on Friday. 

New Year’s Eve, Saturday 31 December - Free travel will be provided on all of our services from 23:45 until 04:30, or last service. 

From around 14:00, Waterloo, Westminster and Jubilee Bridges, and roads in central London will start to close to prepare for the ticketed fireworks event. All bridge and road closures will be in place from 20:00 and most will re-open at 06:00 on Sunday 1 January, or when it is safe to do so. Once road closures are in place, bus hubs will be in operation. Some central London road closures will remain until 18:00 for the New Year’s Day Parade.





London Underground


We are undertaking a comprehensive improvement programme across London’s transport network, including the modernisation of the Tube.

Bakerloo line
On Monday 26 December, there will be no service between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone due to a reduced Bank Holiday service.

Central line
Lancaster Gate Tube station will be closed from Wednesday 4 January until July 2017.

Circle line
From Monday 26 December until 21:30 on Friday 30 December, trains will not run between Aldgate and Gloucester Road via Tower Hill, while we carry out track and drainage replacement in the Earl’s Court area. From 21:30 on Friday 30 December, there will be no service from Edgware Road to Embankment, via Victoria.

District line
On Saturday 24 December, and from Saturday 31 December until Monday 2 January, there will be no service between Earl’s Court and Kensington (Olympia), as part of a reduced holiday service. 

From Monday 26 until Friday 30 December, trains will not run between Gloucester Road and Acton Town/Richmond/Wimbledon. A special train service will run between Edgware Road and Upminster via Victoria. After 21:30 on the Friday, the closure extends from Gloucester Road to Embankment. There will also be no service between Edgware Road and Wimbledon/Kensington (Olympia). Piccadilly line trains will call additionally at Ravenscourt Park, Stamford Brook (westbound only) and Turnham Green.




London Overground


Tomorrow, Friday 16 December, trains will not serve New Cross. This is while we boost services between Clapham Junction and Shepherd’s Bush, and between Crystal Palace and Dalston Junction.
 
On Sunday 18 December, there will be no service between the following stations for Network Rail track work:
 Liverpool Street and Enfield Town/Cheshunt (via Seven Sisters)/Chingford, until 10:15
 Wandsworth Road and Clapham Junction
 New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace/West Croydon
 
Trains will not run between Romford and Upminster between Saturday 24 December and Monday 2 January, due to Crossrail construction work. 

On Tuesday 3 and Thursday 5 January, there will be no service between Hackney Downs and Enfield Town/Cheshunt (via Seven Sisters) after 22:45, due to Network Rail track work. 

On Wednesday 4 January, there will be no northbound service after 23:00 between Bethnal Green and Enfield Town/Cheshunt (via Seven Sisters). There will be an amended timetable between Liverpool Street and Chingford after 23:00 and trains will call additionally at Cambridge Heath and London Fields.

There is no service between Gospel Oak and Barking until February 2017. This is while Network Rail carry out major works to enable new, longer trains to run from 2018. For more information, please click here

TfL Rail


During the festive period, there will be planned works and service changes. This is while Network Rail carry out track and station improvements as part of their Railway Upgrade Plan, as well as Crossrail construction work. 

On Saturday 24 December, and from Wednesday 28 December until Monday 2 January, there will be no service between Chadwell Heath and Shenfield. 

There will be no TfL Rail service between Sunday 25 and Tuesday 27 December. 

From Tuesday 3 January until late May, trains will not run between Brentwood and Shenfield.





London Trams


On Monday 26, Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January, a Sunday service will operate. From Wednesday 28 until Friday 30 December, a Saturday service will operate.





Buses


Bus users may be affected by the following during the festive period. While we will try to maintain a good service, buses may be delayed or stop short of their normal destination: 

Tower Bridge - Until 30 December, Tower Bridge is closed to all traffic while the City of London Corporation carry out major essential maintenance works. Roads in and around the area will be busier than usual. Bus routes RV1 and 78 are on diversion and route 42 is terminating near the south side of Tower Bridge. A1 Holloway Road - Planned closures of A1 Holloway Road continue until mid-January 2017. This is while we carry out work to replace Upper Holloway Bridge. For full details, please visit tfl.gov.uk/upper-holloway-bridge 

Victoria - Until 27 January, there are lane restrictions on Buckingham Palace Road at the junction of Victoria Street. This is for construction works. 

Archway - From 21:00 on Saturday 17 December, the gyratory around Archway Tube station will be removed and switched to two-way traffic. From 05:00 on Sunday 18 December, Highgate Hill will be permanently closed to vehicles and there will be no right turn from St. John's Way to Archway Road or from Junction Road to Holloway Road. Central London - From 09:00 until 18:00 on Monday 19 December, roads in the area will be busier than usual, including Great Portland Street, Regent Street, Whitehall and Parliament Square. This is due to demonstrations. 

Central London - From 08:00 on Monday 26 December until 06:00 on 3 January, there will be lane restrictions on A501 Euston Road between Edgware Road and King's Cross. This is for TfL maintenance and utility works.





Roads


The Congestion Charge will be suspended from Saturday 24 December until Monday 2 January inclusive. The daily charge will apply again from Tuesday 3 January. 

Victoria Embankment - Until the end of the day on Friday 23 December, there will be a westbound lane restriction on Victoria Embankment at the junction of Temple Avenue. This is to facilitate repairs to a gas leak. 

Tower Bridge - Until 30 December, Tower Bridge is closed to all traffic while the City of London Corporation carry out major essential maintenance works. Roads in and around the area will be busier than usual. A signed diversion route is in place, via London Bridge northbound and via Southwark Bridge southbound. A1 Holloway Road - Planned closures of A1 Holloway Road continue until mid-January 2017. This is while we carry out work to replace Upper Holloway Bridge. For full details, please visit tfl.gov.uk/upper-holloway-bridge 

Finchley Road - Until 31 December, there are lane restrictions on A41 at Finchley Road at the junction of College Crescent. This is for utility works. 

Victoria - Until 27 January, there are lane restrictions on Buckingham Palace Road at the junction of Victoria Street. This is for construction works.

Santander Cycles


Santander Cycles are available as normal over the festive period, but a number of docking stations will be not available due to New Year celebrations and London’s annual New Year’s Day Parade. For more information, please visit tfl.gov.uk/festive-travel





National Rail


There will be some planned works and service changes on National Rail services:
 Network Rail planned works will affect journeys to Heathrow airport
 Industrial action will also affect Southern and Gatwick Express services to/from Gatwick Airport
 From Friday 24 until Thursday 29 December, there will be no services to/from Paddington
