French Sundaes presents Le Souffle Au Coeur (1971), Sunday 12th May @ 2:30pm Making a fuss – four French films that dared to be different. A talk illustrated with clips and a chance to see a feature film chosen to inspire. Louis Malle shocked France with his attacks on the Catholic church, the middle classes and the taboo of incest in his 1971 Le souffle au coeur (Dearest Love). A tender and heartfelt film that ripped open the hypocrisies of 1970’s France. Each film is accompanied by an introductory illustrated talk by Jon Davies, Tutor in French Cinema at Morley College. Chicago cop Johnny Kelly (Gig Young), who originally joined the force to make his policeman father happy, has grown restless in the job and has decided to quit. He allows himself to be compromised by a shady lawyer, and is about to desert his wife because of his affair with his mistress Angel Face (Mala Powers), a burlesque floozie in a sleazy nightclub. Although the sergeant who partners with Johnny for his last night of duty is a stranger to him, this enigmatic cop seems to know Johnny very well. They leave in a squad car for what will be a very eventful last night on duty in Chicago for the disillusioned young policeman. On February 3, 2018, director Martin Scorsese, citing the picture’s blazing energy and creativity, introduced City That Never Sleeps as the opening film of a thirty-movie retrospective of Republic Pictures titles that he had chosen to be shown at MOMA in New York City. Baroness Teri von Horhenfels (Francis) deals with the tedium of her aristocratic life in Vienna with a long line of lovers. Her rich husband, Franz (Henry Kolker), seems not to notice. As she’s just about to end her latest love affair, the baroness gets a much-needed dose of excitement when she becomes the target of a charismatic thief (Powell). After staging a daring jewelry robbery, he makes off with the baroness’s ring – and her heart.
