Transport for London - Weekend travel information

Friends wearing face coverings on Tube platform

Weekend travel information

Dear Mr Grantham,

We would like to let you know that there are no planned closures on the Tube this weekend. There will be some future closures that may affect your journey over the festive period and in the New Year. You can find more details below.

Customers must continue to wear a face covering on our services and in stations for the duration of their journey unless they are exempt. This includes the Tube, bus, tram, DLR, London Overground and TfL Rail networks, Dial-a-Ride services, the Emirates Air Line and the Woolwich ferry.

We also expect and recommend the continued use of face coverings in taxis and private hire vehicles by both drivers and passengers unless they are exempt.

We are very grateful to the overwhelming majority of customers who have been complying with this requirement.

Wherever you're going, our network is safe to use. Our services are well ventilated with fresh air, and we ask that you please continue to keep windows open on buses.

Please keep washing or sanitising your hands to help everyone stay safe. You can find out more about what we are doing to keep our services clean.

Our TfL Go app will help you plan your journey and show you the quieter times to travel. It also shows how busy Tube stations are throughout the day.

The quieter times for the Tube are:
  • Between 08:45 and 16:30 and after 18:45 on weekdays
  • Before noon and after 18:45 on weekends
The quieter times for buses are:
  • Between 08:30 and 15:00 and after 17:30 on weekdays
  • Before 11:30 and after 17:30 on weekends

Planned engineering works

Travelling to or from Heathrow during the festive period

Travel to Heathrow Airport will be affected by planned closures throughout the festive period, from Friday 24 December to Monday 3 January.

Customers travelling to Heathrow Airport are advised to use TfL Rail services to and from the airport, except on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. This is due to planned works affecting Piccadilly line services to the airport.

On Christmas Day, there will be no service across the entire network. Customers are advised to use a taxi and private hire, or alternative third-party coach services.

On Boxing Day, there will be no Piccadilly line, TfL Rail or Heathrow Express services to Heathrow due to planned works and closures. Customers are advised to use replacement coaches from Hammersmith which will run non-stop to Heathrow, third-party coaches or taxi and private hire services.

Piccadilly line services will run as normal on Friday 31 December and Saturday 1 January.

Check the Festive travel page for more information.

Work will take place from 22:00 until 05:00, Monday to Friday, with westbound closures in place first before moving to work on the eastbound carriageway. You are advised to leave more time for your journey and follow the signed diversions. For the latest information on how roads are operating in your area, check before you travel.

Westminster Bridge

From Monday 15 November to late January 2022, Westminster Bridge will be restricted to one lane in each direction for all traffic. This is while we carry out essential works to improve the security of the bridge for those walking and cycling.

From Monday 22 November to Thursday 9 December, motorised traffic will not be able to turn right from Westminster Bridge on to Victoria Embankment. A signed diversion will be in place around Parliament Square and Bridge Street. Cyclists will continue to be able to cross Westminster Bridge using dedicated cycle lanes.
