Black History Month
Black transport workers have been keeping London moving for over a century. In 1910, Joe Clough was London’s first Black bus driver. After the Second World War, over 4,000 Windrush generation employees joined London Transport to meet post-war labour shortages. Today, over 30% of Transport for London’s workforce identify as being Black or from an ethnic minority.

Joseph Clough was London’s first Black bus driver. He was also among the very first drivers of motor buses in London, as petrol engines began to replace horse-drawn transport.
